Not Southold Government’s Official Website Comprehensive Development Plan for Southold

SoutholdTown.US is dedicated to promoting civic participation in local government in the Town of Southold. The public should be in control of public business. We the people must insist that our political leaders keep us informed of actions, policies and plans, invite comments from all, and act in the public interest.

Southold Town Government has not kept up with the times.

As the North Fork of Long Island has developed, the government of Southold Town has been in denial. Doing “Business as usual” is wrong. Even if we wanted to, we could not live in the past. The best way to preserve the desirable parts of the past and the only way to prepare for a desirable future is to accept the present, remember the past and anticipate the future.

For the past 50 years Southold Town has engaged in processes to create a plan for the health, safety and welfare of the Town. Until our Town government creates an effective plan for itself, it will not be able to create a functional and sustainable plan for our town.

How can we engage and empower the ultimate decision makers of government?

Skirting the letter and reversing the spirit of freedom of information laws is a recipe for despotism not democracy. In Southold FOIL requests are processed with reluctance. The efficiency of delivering responses by email and on CDR (Compact Disk Recordable) is discouraged. Our Town Board schedules executive sessions whenever it has an excuse. Some sessions are technically, and possibly substantially, in violation of law and put the Town at risk of litigation. But more important than legality of any specific executive session, the need for public information is not being met. Southold Town Board, Town Supervisor, and Town Clerk make some information unavailable.

Civic participation in Southold Town is generally so difficult that only the most persistent (translate - pesky) people are heard. Private interests are respected while public interests are not even recognized. Politics should be about all the people not only about individual persons.

While goals of SoutholdTown.us include comprehensive planning for all of Southold Town including local government, the needs for closeup focus on specific issues not only take precedence, they are a prerequisite for any infinite focus on a whole subject. The immediate purpose of SoutholdTown.us is to evaluate the internet presence of Southold Town government.

Southold Town politics are focused on personal power and private benefits, and ignore the health of the environment and public interest.

Southold Town is a municipal corporation.

Stockholders / Voters have abdicated their responsibility. The politicians who are in control are serving only a vocal minority.
